Chronicle of a Silenced Right of Reply: When Journalistic Opacity Shields the Management of Camping Caravaning
Summer tension at Camping Villas Caravaning La Manga reached unprecedented heights during August 2020. Following the fourth protest gathering of property owners against the management's downward spiral, the Neighbourhood Association (A.VV.) witnessed how the news narrative was being distorted in regional digital media, encountering an insurmountable wall regarding their legitimate right of reply.
Media Bias and the Vetoed Reply On 19 August, the digital newspaper Murciaplaza.com reported on the residents' demonstrations after requesting graphic material from the association. Although journalist Diego Sánchez initially acceded to the request to replace an archive photograph — thereby avoiding confusion regarding health safety measures during the protest —, the following day he published an interview with María del Mar Martínez that shattered reporting rigor. The piece, headlined under the premise that the campsite was battling against the "bad reputation" alleged by "some residents", ignored the true representativeness of over 500 association members and gave an unverified voice to a board aligned with the interests of the management company and a foreign multinational. Faced with a barrage of inaccuracies, direct personal slurs against the association’s presidency, and unfounded figures regarding membership numbers, the board of directors drafted a rigorous formal request for reply and rectification. However, the media outlet’s institutional responses reflected a calculated evasion: The staff writer Diego Sánchez: "We’ll talk when I get back from holiday." The deputy manager, Noelia Guilló: "Send me the written reply and a phone number to get back to you." The subsequent silence made clear the publication's refusal to offer the same platform to those affected, forcing the association to channel its defence through its own website.
Dismantling the Management's Arguments The reply document sent to the media outlet — and silenced by it — dismantles point by point the statements made in the interview:
Sanitation and Maintenance: While the interviewee defended an optimal state of cleanliness and safety, the documentary evidence provided by the association reflected abandoned plots, a proliferation of rodents due to zero pest control, and deficient palm tree pruning that left severe damage after Storm Gloria.
Health and Safety: The residents' demonstrations strictly complied with regulations and official authorizations from the Government Delegation, standing in stark contrast to the laxity permitted during events and parties organized within the premises, where social distancing and protocols were conspicuously absent.
Legal Action and Finances: Claims of losing any lawsuit against the management company were categorically refuted — pointing out that prior court rulings exist against the entity — and persistent financial mismanagement was exposed, exemplified by unjustified budget overruns of up to €180,000 funded through mandatory special assessments.
Usurpation of Representation: The statement highlighted that the speaker, María del Mar Martínez (who is also president of the Tourism Board of the Region of Murcia), lacks notarial accreditation as president of the property owners' community according to the latest assembly, resorting to personal slurs ("Juan and his gang") to devalue a democratic organisation that unites the vast majority of plot owners against the corporate steamroller.
This episode highlights the tight grip between certain corporate interests and media complacency, denying a voice to the complex's rightful owners. Far from silencing the community, this news blackout reinforces the determination of an association that will continue to demand transparency, cleanliness, and dignity in La Manga.
